On Amy’s Baking Company

I don’t know if anyone caught the Amy’s Baking Company episode on Kitchen Nightmares when it aired on May 10th of this year, but there has been an absolute internet shitstorm going on since it aired.

In case you haven’t seen the episode yourself, I’ll post. You need to understand just exactly what it is I’m talking about if you haven’t seen it already.

Owners Samy and Amy Bouzaglo were featured on one episode of Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares. Gordon Ramsey is a notorious hothead in the kitchen with a “my way or the highway” attitude. The server who was fired during the episode has put in her two cents about what happened.

After the show aired on May 10th, Amy and Samy have made a series of PR disasters. They closed the restaurant and had a Grand Reopening. Samy faces potential deportation and, if he is sent back, the restaurant could go belly up. All of the legal nightmares this couple is facing is horrible.

Do I think Amy has control issues? Yes. Do I think she really needs to trust her employees a little more? Yes. Does my opinion matter one iota?

Not at all.

Kitchen Nightmares is a “reality” show in which a few days are filmed and show editors go in, snip out boring parts and paste things together to make it short for television and also dramatic to boost ratings. It’s been said before by those featured on Survivor the show is edited to make things more exciting or to make people seem worse than they are. It’s all about ratings.

And that’s what’s gotten me down to the real meat and potatoes of why I’m writing this article. You can see in the episode I’ve linked above that Amy and Samy have some things to work on and they’re both power driven people. Samy obviously loves Amy very much and he’s trying to make her dream a reality. She can’t take criticism. Fine. Being angry that they’re taking server tips? Okay, I can understand that.

Here’s what I DON’T understand.

People going to Amy’s Baking Company’s website to tell her to “die” or “kill herself”. I don’t understand why people feel the need to go to someone’s website or blog or twitter or whatever and hope someone “kills her cats”.

Amy is a HUMAN BEING. No human being should ever EVER be met with hate like this. She shouldn’t be threatened. She shouldn’t be told to die. She has a right to live and run her business.

You don’t like her business? You don’t agree with its practices? Don’t go there. Voice your opinion, but keep it respectful. If she comes to your page and chews you a new ass for negative comments, take a page from what you should do in this instance and don’t respond. Let it go. Move on.

I cannot and will not understand why we think, as an internet community, that it is okay to threaten someone personally for doing something we find objectionable. Put yourself in her place. You are trying to do your best. You think your food is good. You open a business and you’re excited. And now everyone hates what you do. Then you go on a show. You are doing what you do and now a shitload of people are telling you to go die.

How terrible would you feel?

Questionable ethics or not, they’re still people.

  1. that is a thing that makes me angry also. i have plenty of opinions about amy’s business choices, her vindictive attitude towards customers (sorry, but fucking with someone’s food with harmful intent is not a thing i am okay with), her behaviour on her facebook page (and the fact that she stole loads of pictures from Pinterest to advertise as her restaurant food), and more, but… i don’t see the point in being cruel to her personally. she needs help, not trolls and bastards.
